The Words of Dr. Tim Tooten

“I really want to take you to a small town in the south. And I want you to meet this young man intently listening to the radio. This young man is intrigued by the announcers and what they are saying. And the fact that within this box that people are talking.” Dr. Tim Tooten spoke those words during his lecture on December 5, 2011 in McGuire Hall, hosted by Greycomm Studios. Tooten is a WBAL-TV journalist and an affiliate professor at Loyola University Maryland. He shared his insights about what he believes are the most important aspects of journalism in a constantly changing industry.

Loyola Goes Green and Greek

Pledging to a fraternity or sorority on a non-Greek campus is no easy task, however some Loyola students find a way...

 

 

On a campus that maintains its sovereignty from the Greek life organizations, for students at Loyola wanting to become members of a fraternity or sorority, pledging is a potentially complicated issue. While not impossible, the dedication and commitment required during the “rush” period, when potential pledges are undergoing the evaluation and initiation process, is extremely time consuming.

While upholding one’s pledging commitments is no easy process for students residing on a Greek affiliated campus, it becomes twice as hard for students on a non-Greek campus such as Loyola. One of the most important aspects of the rushing process is to maintain total secrecy. One must not reveal their pledge status to anyone, however the time consuming commitment may become more noticeable when there is additional travel time involved. Pledges must find transportation to the areas of congregation for meetings off campus even if they themselves do not own or have access to a vehicle.

Loyola Swim Team Continues Success

Both the men and women's Swimming and Diving teams for Loyola University Maryland earned big victories in their meets on Saturday, December 3rd. The men and women defeated St. Peter's University, 257-106, and 298-60, respectively.

Father Jack Dennis Says Goodbye

The recent announcement was made to the Loyola community that Father Jack Dennis will be leaving at the end of the academic year. Although many are sad for his departure, a great opportunity as principal awaits him at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis.

Father Jack Dennis has been leading Loyola’s Campus Ministry for years as the director. Campus Ministry is an organization that focuses on empowering Loyola’s staff and students to create a unified community in faith and to integrate that faith into daily experiences. With this mission in mind, Father Jack has improved Loyola’s community significantly through leading retreats and community service trips.
