Online Porn Addiction

By Marisa Massaro, Staff

Lately I've been researching a lot about why some people are addicted to online pornography. (It's my chosen topic for my research paper) I came across this article in New York Magazine about how addiction to online pornography is actually destroying relationships. "Dale Lach, a paralegal who helps people represent themselves in their own divorces, says she’s seeing more and more women who want to leave their husbands because of porn," the article stated. The article then continues to give real examples of couples who have been faced with this issue. However, if this issue is such a grave problem that has the capability to destroy lives, why isn't it listed in the DSM-IV as an actual mental disease? In the 2013 version, there will be some revisions, however, "addiction to pornography" won't be listed explicitly. It will be considered a "hypersexual disorder" because instead of focusing on the underlying issues, rather than the surface.
